If “Weird” Al Yankovic were a woman, he probably would have written a few of the songs in “Hot Flashes.”
Robidoux Resident Theatre’s latest production uses song parodies and original numbers to vent about the uncomfortable moments of aging and menopause. Gloria Gaynor’s disco hit “I Will Survive” becomes “I Will Not Age,” a ditty in which the ladies lament “lips of collagen” and “injecting around the eyes.” The cast of four will also riff on Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman,” Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood,” Grateful Dead’s “Truckin’” and “Memory” from the musical “Cats.”
“The music is fun to listen to,” says Cheryl Herrman, the musical director of RRT’s production of “Hot Flashes,” which will be performed from Aug. 2 through 18 at Robidoux Landing Playhouse. “There’s ’70s rock, there’s the Grateful Dead, there’s blues, there’s country, there’s even a rap.”
“There’s nothing better than menopausal women doing a rap,” jokes Tish Thomas, one of the play’s four stars.
“Hot Flashes” — a musical written in 2002 by Kate Finn and Rick Weiss that became a huge hit in the Pacific Northwest — focuses on a four-woman singing group as they simply sing about what happens to women as they get older. The group includes the sweet and naive Sharon (played by Janet Snider), the former hippie Kate (played by Tammy Johnson), the angry “rock ‘n’ roll goddess” Marvella (played by Thomas) and the young, hopeful and naturally clueless Lynn (played by Lindsay Prawitz).
